Notes by Sarah Reber sreber@ucla.edu February 14, 2006 This folder contains data from the Department of Health Education and Welfare Office of Civil Rights school surveys for 1968-1988 (some years are missing). Original tapes were obtained from UCLA Institute for Social Science Research. The zipped folder original_files.zip containd the files as read directly from these tapes. The files were encoded in binary formats that varied from year to year. These files were decoded into a uniform ASCII format by Sarah Reber and Ben Denckla. Documentation for the decoded files can be found in Documentation\new\StartHere.pdf. You should read this document first. The directories containt the following information: ascii Decoded data files in ASCII format documentation\new Documentation describing the process of decoding the files documentation\original PDFs of the original documentation associated with the OCR files original_files.zip The original binary-encoded data files as read from the data tapes misc This folder contains the programs used to decode the binary files and other files created during the decoding process Most users will not need to use the files in this folder misc\sample ASCII files containing the first and last 10 observatons of each data file
